MY ROSES - "Co to Do"

CONSTANCE SPRY: English Rose bred by David Austin in the UK in 1961. This is the first English Rose by David Austin. Classified as a shrub, but It makes an excellent climber because of its enormous size. We have it growing on an arbour and also along a tall fence and rose arch where it can strut it's stuff!........ it truly is a sight to behold when in bloom. Unfortunately it only blooms once in a season, but my, oh my, it puts on a grand performance and the fragrance is outstanding. I had to have this rose when I first saw magazine pictures of it and I certainly was not disappointed! Lovely light to mid pink large abundant blooms. (please click on all pics to enlarge for better view)
CREAM ABUNDANCE: Floribunda, bred by Harkness in the UK. 1999. This rose was new to me last year and I already have it down as one of my most favourite roses. Fragrance is mild to moderate to my nose, though it is reported to be strong!!! It is a beautiful succulent colour of rich cream, very demure! Medium size blooms are formed in single to large clusters on medium stems. A very beautiful rose indeed!
DOUBLE DELIGHT: Hybrid Tea, bred by two separate breeders Ellis and Swim in Us. 1977. This has to be one of the most popular of all roses and rightly so. This HT has so much going for it. The colouration is very remarkable, predominantly cream with pink to cherry red on the outside of it's petals and colours blending together according to sunlight and age. Then the fragrance is exquisite and intense and has to be in the top five for fragrance in modern roses. It has won many awards. This rose is a double delight for fragrance and unique blend of colour, and for myself, two of my first DDs formed double crowns. Now that's taking it to the limit. A very favourite rose indeed!

Cream Abundance has caught my heart, thank you for these georgeous pictures, it´s going to be in my must-have list! I bought Henrietta Barnett, Parky and St. Richard of Chichester in winter and got Red Hat Lady gratis from Harkness. Now I´m longing for their first blooms.

Oh Pauline. You slay me. That Cream Abundance looks a lot like a rose I've seen in my aunt's house (where Minou lives). She didn't know its name, but it is quite bloomy and ruffly like your images. The colour starts out ivory with a touch of pale yellow and ages to a lovely kind of alabaster pale pale cream. Does great in bouquets and ages gracefully. I'm going to keep an eye out for this one.

I'm afraid my Jubilee Celebration may be at death's door. Not a good time to discover this as planting roses in our area is difficult once temps get so high.

Your Constance Spry is fantastic loking! I have seen images of it in full glorious spring bloom. And such a range of pink -- from warm to cool tones.

Beautiful roses! I especially love Constance Spry.I heard on the local news that the Japanese beetle has been found on P.E.I.so I am concerned about how hard they are to control.Do you have them in your area?

I really love Constance Spry too! Huge flowers and a powerful sweet myrrh based rose fragrance.
Never seen Cream Abundance - it looks great - many Harkness roses deserve much more attention! I have never smelled a double delight with a fragrance that impressed me - according to reviews I should - but only been dissapointed so far...

And you are going to love one of the new Austin Roses that are going to be introduced this year: The name alone will thrill you! It is called 'The Wedgwood Rose' --- no kidding!

Those roses are gorgeous. I just love the colors. Not too long and we'll have roses blooming again in Idaho. Thanks for sharing. Teresa

Guy and Gals, I am so honoured by your responses.

Jana - Lovely to meet you through blotanical and here. After Austin's, I am very partial to Harkness roses. I really love them and most of them seem to have such wonderful shiny leaves! Thank you so much.
Pauline

Muggle, Hi again - Thank you so much for your lovely comments! Are all the roses you are talking about bred by Harkeness - I have to check them out!
Take Care, Pauline

Dear Joanne,
Yup, I have not been blogging lately. Been so busy.
After a horrid winter for us, we have been blessed with a remarkable Spring! It is amazing. We have not had any rain for a very long time and mostly sunny days. So I am called to the garden. We have been eating dinner late, then I am pooped! :) But such a satisfying feeling.

Enlarging Photos on blogger. Mine are not with Piccassa! but when I upload, I have already sized them. I am going for 800X600 pixels. Some of my older pics are smaller pixels, so if I use them, then they will NOT enlarge as much!..........I hope this helps! If not, please get back to me on this, and we may be able to sort it out!
Pauline

Catherine, thank you so much about learning from here. That was a really nice compliment. I intend to add a few extra comments to MY ROSE LIST, for instance, I am only reporting on roses that I grow myself. It is a policy (if you can call it that) of my own, not to mention size or disease factors of the roses that I grow for the simple reason, that this information is nil and void in other regions or part of the world.
Even where I live, my own micro-climate is soo diferent from a rose garden down the road. That gardener lives on the ocean, gets lots of wind, gets amazing light and sunlight, whereas we are limited. We are moist and boggy in parts, totally diferent soil - more heavy clay. We are surrounded by a huge dense thicket of trees - we get no winter sunshine. Both of our micro climates have negatives and positives, but are so far apart on the growing scale!! For instance my roses, get way taller, because they are obviously reaching for light!..etc! Take care,
Pauline

Hi Sandra,You are so supportive, I love reading your comments. They are very much appreciated. Hope your new blog is doing well. I have to get around to them all, I am very much behind. Take care and thank you!
Pauline

Nikki, thank you, you always give me a giggle with your comments!:) Yup, definitely, you should look out for Cream Abundance - I love it. I hope it does as well this second season! Sorry about Jube - I wonder why you are losing that?? I have two and the winter did not seem to affect them, though it did many others this year. Keep my fingers crossed!
Take care - Pauline

Hi Carolyn,
I am so far behind, sorry! I have had a few qick views at your amazing new entries since I was back there. I am ready now to go visit properly! :) I am soo sorry about the JBs. I heard about them often on the Roses forum on Garden Web, and I thank my lucky stars that we do not yet have them on the West Coast! Good luck. I hope they do not find their way to Aiken House!
Love Pauline

Hi my friend Niels. Lovely to hear from you. Yes, I love Harkness roses almost as much as David Austin's. I have quite a few of them, and six Amber Queens right off the bat. That mellow yellow, just seems to go nicely with all the other colours. Have never seen it clash, yet!:) Though at one time, you would never have seen anything with hints of yellow in my garden, including peach and definitely not ORANGE, but now, things are a little different. Though I still am dubious with orange shades!

Wow! what you say about Double Delight's fragragance - UNBELIEVABLE! But of course I believe you! It has won major awards for fragrance, but I guess sometimes, and it has happened to me, we do not detect what other's do! I have a hard time detecting different fragrances. Too me they are mostly none at all, mild, moderate or itense! Beyond that, I have a tough time describing them. I always thought though, that St. Swithun and some roses like that smell of Almonds and Annis to me. :shrug!!!!!

You are right about the Wedgwood Rose - I AM impressed.......and you spelled it right! :) Amazing how many people put the "e" in the middle of "Wedgwood". Anyhow I saw it on Jana's blog and of course, I have to have at least one of them. Not only, but it looks very BEAUTIFUL! Gotta have it!!!!! Take good care! I will be visiting you on your blog asap! I am looking forward to it!
Pauline

Hi Teresa,
Thank you for you nice comment and coming to visit
Cheers! Pauline

Thanks you for sharing these beautiful pictures of your roses. Last year we moved into a home with a more sunny garden then I have had in years so. . .I am in the process of adding roses here and there. Possibly next year I'll dig a bed just for roses. I am assuming since you have roses in march that you are not in the NE USA. I am in Pennsylvania and am wondering which of your lovely ramblers would do well in my climate? Any suggestions would be helpful. It's so nice to meet you.

Hi Pauline,
My friend Joanne said I should check out the roses you grow. I am so glad I took her advice, your roses are stunning!
I know roses can be grown here, Alberta, but I just can not grow them , so now I know where to go to see some gorgeous blooms.

Thank you all so much for the later comments. It seems a lot of you like Cream Abundance. I am really looking forward to it again this year.

Ahrisha, good luck with your new garden. You will be so happy to have a sunnier exposure. My roses could do with that, but I make do with the minimum of sunshine. I know they would be better with more. But I do my best with what we have!:) The roses that are shown, are not from this year. I am just giving an alphabetical index of the roses which I grow. I am in south west Canada, B.C. bordering the state of Washington. So no roses yet!!!! Though I can see the flower buds. As far as ramblers go, you would need to check your zone or look up the individual rose, as I believe, because they are usually once blooming (with an amazing flush), their cycle starts to prepare for the next year's roses after they have hipped. So if you get any winter damage to these canes, especially the tips, then they will not bloom the following year. I wish I could help you with hardiness for your area. I get a lot of my information from HMF "Help Me Find" Roses. Here is the link http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/roses.php It is a valuable source for people who grow roses. If you cannot find the info you need from there re hardiness for the particular rose. Then you could always try Garden Web Rose Forum. There are an amazing bunch of Consultant Rosarians on that board that are always willing to help. The link is http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/roses/ and it is very easy to sign up. The Ramblers I grow are Paul's Himalayan Musk, Filipes Kiftsgate, American Pillar and David Austin's Constance Spry. Other roses I grow as climbers, but are not classified as such are, David Austin's Golden Celebration and Heritage also Buff Beauty and Belle Amour.........and the beautifu Eden Rose(which is a climber) Hope this helps.

Mary, thank you for visiting my blog and for your kind comments. Looking forward to visiting you too, I just need to find some time to keep up all together. I am very behind on my blog, but I have things up my sleeve ready to go.

Lynne, Nice to know I have been missed, heehee! Just so darn busy lately and I do feel bad that my blog has been suffering, but I am trying to get back on it and to keep up with others too. Please do not give up on me. I am glad you have purchased Ebb Tide, your so lucky to have blooms already. I checked mine out today, and I can see a flower bud!! Have a good Wednesday!

Alison, How nice to hear from you. Joanne has told me about you and your visit to England and another pending, I believe. Mind you, I think you are an ex-pat like myself, so it is almost old hat. :)
I talked to my grandson in Edmonton yesterday and he said there had been some snow. Ugh!!! I was there this time last May and actually got a sunburn.!!!! Thank you for your nice comments on my roses.
Take care,
Pauline

What month would be best to visit to see such beauty as your pictures show? What type of weather is there during that time of the year? Guess you still need winter clothes?

Even in the most sexually liberated and self-satisfied of nations, many people still yearn to burn more, to feel ready for bedding no matter what the clock says and to desire their partner of 23 years as much as they did when their love was brand new.
The market is saturated with books on how to revive a flagging libido or spice up monotonous sex, and sex therapists say “lack of desire” is one of the most common complaints they hear from patients, particularly women.
