MY ROSES - "Eb to Ev"

EBB TIDE: Floribunda. Bred by Tom Carruthers in the United States.2006. Strong fragrance - unusual colour of mauve also described as deep smoky purple. I guess in the rose world of "blues" this is a good description, bearing in mind that there is no such thing as "blue" in a rose, so the more blue a pink or red rose contains, then usually this is extremely sought after, it seems! Anyhow, new to me last season, I am sure looking forward to this rose this season when it has matured a little. This too looks wonderful in a vase with other roses - very complimentary, in my opinion. I am very happy with it.
EDEN ROSE: (aka Pierre de Ronsard) Climber. The first Rose of the "Romantica" line, bred by House of Meilland in France. 1985 Cream with pink dominance. What can I say, it is just beautiful. My own is really just starting off, (in comparison to some of the spectacular specimens I have seen) but getting the hang of training climbers a little better, I am really looking forward to it this year. One of the most romantic looking roses for sure, it takes your breath away. The flowers are quite large when fully open but look just as beautiful when not - a true cup shaped rose for sure. Sadly, the down side is, it has little fragrance, BUT, I would not want to be without this rose. Also very floriferous when it puts on it's main show. Repeats throughout the season, but with less abundance. I highly recommend this climber. Which too by the way, is not rampant, so it fits nicely over a walk-though rose arch.
EVELYN: English Rose bred by David Austin in the UK. 1992. A beautiful very popular Austin - lovely fragrance from which David Austin and French perfumiers got together to produce the perfume in one of Crabtree and Evelyn's line. I am fascinated with the colour range of this rose. You can have a perfect peach bloom and a perfectly clear pink bloom on the same stem - so charming. It is great in an arrangement for a special occasion, but it really does not last long in a vase. But that does not stop me - if it fades after two days, then I replace it with a different rose, still it is beautiful to see in an arrangement. Moderately floriforous in my garden.
Thank you for looking, Pauline

Oh, Pauline. I swoon whenever you show your beautiful gardens. That Evelyn graces your fence and gate so nicely. I just got Eden this spring so it is a tiny thing yet. Here in So Cal, my neighbor's Eden is a huge shrub (or short climber), so I can't wait until mine grows up.

Hi Pauline

Beautiful photos.
Yes Evelyn is a lovely rose. I killed mine sadly, I had planted it in a place that was really too shady and moved it not something roses like too well although I have moved a Cottage Garden rose twice and it is really thriving.

Hi Pauline,
Again your rose photos are so beautiful.I have never seen Ebb Tide before but it so pretty.
I love the Eden rose and have planted it in my garden but it didn't winter over th first year so last year I bought another one and I didn't get one bloom from it.However I hope it wintered over (still under a little snow) nad maybe it will bloom this year.
I think you have the right touch with roses for sure!
Take care,
Carolyn

Ebb Tide: Florabunda--I'd love that one! The color is stunning! I don't grow roses (sadly, I guess)...but I do enjoy looking at them in others' gardens! I grow carpet/knock-out roses and they are wonderful for my purposes...but to see your roses is a special treat. Strolling through your yard & gardens seems like a surreal experience found only in my dreams:-)

The Ebb Tide has to be one of the most beautiful I have ever seen....but then again I am drawn to purple flowers. It is a beauty

Hi Guys,

Thank you so very much for your nice comments.

Nikki, I think you will love Eden, I am just realizing though because of one of the posts here, that it does seem to take a couple of years or so to get established, so please do not give up. Mine was good last year, and I am sure it will be even better this year. Enjoy it.
P.

Joanne, thank you! I am really interested in how you like Cottage Garden. I ordered two as I really had wanted this rose. When it finally bloomed, I was soo disappointed! It definitely was NOT Cottage rose.......and of course, I had two of them. I tried to get an identity on these two roses but to no avail!

Finally I saw someone post (on Garden Web) an awesome looking climbing rose called "Parade". I knew it was the rose(s) I had. (which had been unhappy with, because it was not what I ordered). I had been treating it as a shrub rose, and it was oh so gangly for my liking.

I was 100 per cent sure that these are, the climbing rose "Parade". (after I realized that I had given one of them away as it was not my idea of a "cool" rose)

Please check Parade out here: http://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=21.98342

Now I am going with the flow. Moved it just this week and have trained it on a trellis fence. Hoping for good results, but YES!! I still wonder about"Cottage Rose!! Joanne, I would sure appreciate some comments on it. Would it be worth my while re-ordering it??? Thank you. Heh,have great Easter!!
P

Hi Carolyn,
Thank you once again and for such great undercover help which I will always be truly thankful for.
If your Eden is still alive do not worry about the vacant blooms in it's first year, I am almost certain that mine was pretty much like that when I planted it three years' ago. Last year, I was finally pleased with it.:) Just one of those that needs a little more time!
Have a wonderful Easter Weekend!
Luv P.

Dear Jan, thank you so much for your lovely comments and coming to visit me, especially since roses are not your true thing. But then again, you are growing Knockouts and such - I would love to have them too, believe me, but I have to cram all my roses in our back because of the deer at the front, My garden is pretty large, but I seem to be always running out of space for more roses.
Hope you have a wonderful Easter Weekend!
Luv P

Dirt Princess, Hi, thank you for coming. I think you would love Ebb Tide. I am very drawn also to the "blue" roses - anything blue, actually :) Have a great weekend!
P

Catherine - thank you so for your nice comment - much appreciated.
P

Lynn, thank you for coming. I love lavender roses too. (or blue) I am excited for you. There is NOTHING like seeing newly ordered/bought roses come into bloom for the first time. Such a thrill.

ENJOY! Have a great Easter Weekend.
Love P.

Hi Pauline
Sorry it was a slip of the pen I meant to say Cottage Rose, but I think you realised I meant that.

It is a delightful rose but not vigorous and like many of David Austin English roses the heads can be a little heavy for their necks especially in inclement weather.
However I wouldn't be without it and even managed to take a cutting which is planted nearbye and now flowers so I guess another rose that does OK without specialist root stock as many do.

Parade is clearly a much deeper shade and far more vigorous so not possible to confuse but then in a garden centre the staff do mix things up I have found that with clematis. In fact I once saw a rose on a David Austin stand at Hampton Court with the wrong name it was so obviously Officinalis which the guy agreed when I asked him.
Have a lovely Easter

I have just found your blog!WoW!
My roses are just coming around after the worst summer we have ever had in my part of Australia. We live near the very bad bushfires that took place in January. Luckly they did not reach us.
So, many of my roses died as the heat of 115f,the very hot winds plus our drought was just too much.
I have the Ronsard and she is coming back , some David Austins made it and others did not.
I have just bought the red pierre ronsard and cross fingers - it will come on.
I love your evelyn roses and look forward to reading your blog - I think I am a roseaholic like you! LOL
Wishing you a rosey Easter.

Your roses are so beautiful! They are one of my very favorite flowers. I just love your blog too. It is so romantic and peaceful when I visit. My roses are just beginning their first bloom. Only a bloom or two coming on but hope to see the really awesome display in a few days maybe. As always I have more bushes to get planted just as soon as my schedule and the weather cooperates.

Hi Pauline - always wonderful to see your beautiful garden and roses! Ebb tide is not available here in Europe yet, but I have seen it in USA a few times and really like it. Your pictures are flattering for this rose. I also love Eden even though it only becomes a 5 feet shrub rose here. Evelyn is a diva that is not very coldhardy. And I do not think the fragrance is as strong as it described and hyped to be. Good and fruity - but not overwhelming like say Frederic Mistral. Got home from 7 days of spring salmon fishing and have bad pneumonia - but do go out in my garden every other day to prune my roses. The Weather is very sunny and spring is truly here -- cough - cough!

Thanks for the later posts.

Hi Joanne, Yes, I did know what you meant!:) Thanks so much on your imput of Cottage Garden! As a rose gardener, we are always striving for MORE fragrance, more abundance etc. It is very difficult to get it all, though we can always seek!!:)

Sandra, thank you. I always love your visits. Good luck with your own new blog. I will keep visiting!

Lady Jicky, Thank you so much, I wanted to go to your blog personally, but could not through my own, but checked you out on the net. I have to say, I really enjoyed the two that I saw. Thank you for your visit here. So much appreciated.

Debbie, as always, thank you for your kind comments.
Pauline

.....and to my dear friend Niels, great to hear from you at last. I have been thinking about you on your fishing trip. Actually wanted to send you some pics of some salmon pics in our former days when we used to have our boat and fish and can and smoke. Alan still smokes, but we have to purchase the fish now. :)

Anyhow, my dear! You are home safe, though not in the best of health So very sorry to hear you contracted Pneumonia. What am I going to do with you!!!!!!! I am assuming, that you are on the mend! Oh, I do hope so! and you will be back fully on your own blog soon, which is very special!!!!
Thank you dear Niels - take good care.
Luv Pauline
